Five questions to ask before your next network upgrade

Most network problems are designed in long before the first cable is pulled. These five questions separate a lasting upgrade from an expensive patch.

A network upgrade is rarely just an equipment swap. In hospitals, schools and government buildings the issues that frustrate users for years are often built in during planning. Before you approve the next upgrade, ask these five questions.

1. How is each space actually used?

Wi-Fi designed from a floor plan alone often fails in practice. A ward, a classroom and a records office have very different user densities and interference. A site survey that looks at real usage is the cheapest insurance you can buy.

2. What will run on this network in five years?

Clinical imaging, VoIP, CCTV and cloud applications place different demands on the core. Plan capacity, switching and fibre backbones for the systems on your roadmap, not just today’s load.

3. Who will be able to find a fault at 2am?

Documentation is how a four-hour outage becomes a ten-minute fix.

Insist on testing, labelling and as-built records at handover. If your team can’t trace a port from the documentation, the job isn’t finished.

4. How will work happen without stopping operations?

In live environments, sequencing matters as much as engineering. Ask for a phased implementation plan that shows how critical services stay up during the change.

5. What happens after go-live?

Agree support, spares, monitoring and warranty arrangements before installation. A network nobody monitors will degrade quietly until it fails loudly.
